Physical Description

Support

Paper.

No. of leaves
361. Fols 148v-149r, 246, 262v, 269r-270v and 361v are (or were originally) blank. 210 mm x 140 mm.
Foliation

The manuscript has a modern foliation from the nineteenth century in the upper right-hand corner of the recto pages.

Layout

Written in long lines of 26 to 36 lines. Rubrics, two- and three-line majuscules and line-fillers in red ink; initial letters in the text are slashed in red, and here and there the beginning words of a paragraph are undelined in red. A number of folia have been excised after fol. 262.

Script

There are several hands. It appears the manuscript is a composite of several independently written texts.

Additions

On the otherwise blank fol. 270v two pen trials have been added:

  • The Beginning of the Hail Mary: aue maria gracia plena domius tecum ben
  • Four lines from a folk ballad (or possibly a parody of such): megh haffuær drø|met iæn drøm i | nat thet var om | ien kat t thet och | om jen t hundh | hundh och om jen

Binding

Wooden boards covered in dark brown leather on 4 double sewing supports; 218 mm x 160 mm x 91 mm. There are two fastenings consisting of a metal clasp at the end of a leather strap and a catchplate on the front cover. During binding two quires have been bound in the wrong order (fols 330-341 and fols 342-353).

Accompanying Material

There are two accompanying items glued to the pastedown of the front cover. One slip is in Árni Magnússon's hand and the text reads: Bekommet fra Monsr Christian Frost | fra Friderickshald. | hans fader er kiób-|mand i Fridericks-|hald, og meenes at | have ejet bogen. | Studioso Norvego | mediante Domino stubæo | 1720. The other slip is written by Carl J. Brandt and contains a list of contents of the manuscript.

History

Origin

Written in Denmark. The manuscript probably originates from a religious house or similar environment, and West Jutlandic linguistic features may show a link to West Jutland. The script and contents, however, indicate a date of origin around 1500 or a little later (cf. Skautrup, Det danske sprogs historie II p. 25 , and Frederiksen, Senmiddelalderlige mystikere p. 45 ). A former dating to c. 1470 as the latest possible date of origin was made by some scholars, as the copy of a letter on fol. 149v makes mention of a person known to have died in 1472 as still being alive. The letter has also been taken as evidence that the manuscript originated at the Grinderslev Augustinian Abbey in Salling, West Jutland, since the prior from this institution is named as one of the sealers of the letter.
