Foliation

The entire manuscript has been paginated in black ink on the recto side (1-37), and the first 14 leaves, i.e. those not left blank, have also been foliated (1-14) by Kålund in red ink (now somewhat faded as a result of conservation); the manuscript was refoliated in pencil (1-19) by Mariane Overgaard in 1980 in connexion with restoration.

  • I: fols 1-10 (1, 2+9, 3+8, 4+7, 5+6, 10)
  • II: fols 11-19 (11, 12+17, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19)

Layout

Written in long lines throughout, with 22 to 25 lines per page. There are running titles in the same hand as the text.

Script

Written, apart from fol. 12 , by Jón Erlendsson from Villingaholt in a clear seventeenth-century Gothic book hand.

Fol. 12 has been added later to replace a missing leaf; the hand is younger but appears consciously to imitate the hand of the main scribe.

Binding

Bound in Árni Magnússon 's time in parchment on cardboard, 310 mm x 196 mm x 6 mm

Accompanying Material

There is a slip ( 152 mm x 140 mm ) in Árni Magnússon's hand; the text reads: Fragment um Bravallar bardaga. Feinged til lans af Jone Þorlaks syne 1709. Sidan til kaups 1710. Er med hendi Sr Jons i Villinga hollte, og var in n bunded i bok med drum søgum.

History

Origin

The manuscript was written in Villingaholt in southern Iceland by Sr. Jón Erlendsson while he was priest there (1632-1672).

Acquisition

According to the accompanying slip, Árni Magnússon borrowed the manuscript from Jón Þorláksson in 1709 and then purchased it from him in the following year .

Custodial History

The manuscript was checked May 28, 1885 by Kålund , who has written on the first fly-leaf: 1 volumen på 14 blade + 1 Arnamagnæansk seddelnotits. 28/5 85.

The manuscript was conserved 13 October-4 December 1980 .

The manuscript was checked 9 June-14 July 1997 by the conservators Mette Jakobsen and Marianne Lund Pedersen .

The manuscript was photographed in February 1980 .

Supplementary photographs were made of the binding February 02, 1998 .
