Bekker-Nielsen, En god bøn s. 55-58
Parchment.
Foliated in the bottom right hand corner of the recto pages. Due to a confusion of the correct order of the gatherings (the fourth and sixth gatherings were mixed up), the correct order of the manuscript is: 1-24, 41-48, 25-40, 49-56.
7 complete gatherings of 8 leaves (4 bifolia) each.
Written in long lines with twelve lines per page. Red majuscules and pen-flourished red and green majuscules occur. There are rubrics in red. Fols 1r and 56 are/were originally blank.
On fols 17, 18, 20, 21, 22 and 24 there are holes or tears in the parchment. They are encircled with ink, and appear to have existed before the parchment was written on. Fol. 18 was folded, and the outer bottom corner is cut away.
The manuscript is written in a Gothic bookhand.
A note on fol. 55 reads: Hialpi mier | gud ad ad | , on the same leaf, some illegible invocations and scribblings are found.
The AM-slip reads: Margretar Saga. | Mariu gratur (er sermo de dolore. Mariæ, cum filium Deum crucifigi conspiceret. Prosopopoeia sub persona Mariæ. Precatio ad Mariam. | Þennann bækling feck | eg 1708 af Pale | Jonssyni lgmanne | enn hann af Sr Gud-|mundi Biarnasyne | (prestz ad vestur-|hőps holum) ä Stad | i Hruta firde. The manuscript was written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund dated the manuscript c. 1500 ( Katalog II s. 482 ), whereas Stefán Karlsson (pers.) dates fols 1v-26v, 28r-41r and 47v-55v to the second quarter of the sixteenth century.
According to the similar accounts found in AM 435 a 4to, and on the AM-slips, the codex once belonged to the priest Bjarni Þorsteinsson, then to his son, also a priest, Guðmundur Biarnason of Staður in Hrútafjörður and then the lawman Páll Jónsson. The note on fol. 30v in AM 435 a 4to reads: Margretar Saga. | Mariugratur i.e.: Sermo sub personâ Mariæ, de dolore Illius, cum filium Christum crucifigi videret. Precatio ad Mariam. | i litlu 16. blada forme. | Eg feck þennan bækling 1708. af lg-|mannenum Ple Jonssyne. enn hann | af Sr Gudmunde Biarnasyne | Stad i Hrutafirde. According to the AM-slips, Árni Magnússon acquired the codex from lögmaður Páll Jónsson vídalín in 1708. See AM 435 a 4to, fol. 30v: Eg feck þennan bækling 1708. af lg-|mannenum Ple Jonssyne., the AM-slip has: Þennann bækling feck | eg 1708 af Pale | Jonssyni lgmanne.
