Parchment.
Foliated 1-120 with a pen in the upper right corner of the recto pages.
The front paste-down and the first fly-leaf are conjugate. An AM-slip in Árni Magnússon's hand has been inserted between the fly-leaf and fol. 1r.
Gatherings III-IV and VI-X made up an earlier prayer book (or part of one), cf. the rubric: Her begynnys noglæ gudelighe bønner. The following quire signatures exist:
Quires I, II, V, and X-XVII have no quire signatures. The fifth quire, in which the prayer for the owner is found, has no signature and has thus been inserted into a previous physical unity, between the first two quires and the psalter-quires.
It also appears from the fact that the miniature of Anna Selbdritt on the last leaf of the quire carrying the quire signature thet annet q (The second quaternion) (fol. 33v) must belong to the prayer to the Virgin and St Anne on the first leaf of the gathering carrying the quire signature thet trediæ q (The third quaternion) (fol. 41r) and not the prayer for the owner, that the gathering has been inserted later.
Written in long lines, 14 to 18 lines per page.
The following lacunae are found in the manuscript: after fols 18v, 78v, 86v, 87v, 99v, 112v, 117v and 120v.
The main hand (Hand 1) writes fols 1r-9r and 16r-118v in a practised gothic hybrid.
A later hand (Hand 2) has filled in the following pages: 10r-14r, and 119v-120v (Commitment Befalelse til Jesus Kristus). The script is a gothic cursive.
Another later hand (Hand 3) has filled in the text on fols 14v-15v (A Prayer to Jesus Christ in His Pain), 77r-v (A Prayer to the Virgin) and 103r-v (A Prayer for the Peace of God for Oluf Nielsen) in a gothic cursive.
A new gothic hand (Hand 4) has filled in fol. 119r (The Ten Commandments).
Hand 5 has written four lines, listing names, on the front fly-leaf in a gothic cursive.
Finally, the marginal comments on fols 109v, 110v-111r, 114v, 115v and the librarian's note on the front fly-leaf are in a seventeenth-century mixed (gothic and latin) hand (Hand 6).
There are two main types of initial and both are lombardic. The two types differ in the style and extent of their decoration, as well as in their distribution in the prayer book. The first main type (main type 1, lombardic) includes initials in just one colour (most usually red) that are only slightly decorated (if at all), and that occur in their large form (3-5 lines) in gatherings I-II, V and X-XVII. In its small version (1-2 lines) it occurs throughout the entire book. The other main type (main type 2, illuminated initial) comprises multicoloured initials with plant decoration and can be found in the more original part of the prayer book, that is gatherings III-IV and VI-IX. Each of the main types occurs in several variants.
1a.
1b.
2a. Illuminated, 5 lines, with floral and/or leaf design in the middle part of the letter, on a square background with foliage as descenders at the corners: fol. 17r.
2b. Illuminated, 3 lines, with descenders in the forms of floral and foliage designs (and sometimes birds): fols 18r, 19r, 22r-v, 24r and 30r.
2c. Illuminated 3 lines with stylised lattice work and leaf extensions: fol. 32r.
2d. 4 lines, columnated letters in contrasting colours with stylised floral decoration: fols 27r and 43r.
2e. 3 lines, illuminated, with flowers/foliage in the middle field, on a square background: fol. 20r.
2f.
On fol. 17r, the second folio in the older part of the prayer book, there is a border with flowers, foliage and animals that surrounds the prayer to the Trinity. There are also the remains of a border with flowers and foliage and an animal on fol. 4r.
The prayer book has 48 framed miniatures that illustrate the text of the prayers and depict scenes from the life of the Virgin, the childhood and adulthood of Jesus, as well as his passion. Some of the miniatures function as devotional and indulgence pictures. There are captions in the form of rolls of text with red lettering. The colours are bright red, blue, grey, dark red, brown, yellow, green as well as gold and silver. Some of the pictures in Our Lady's Psalter are pictoral representations of the fifteen mysteries of the rosary.
The majority of the prayers have rubrics and/or final rubrics in red.
Marginal comments: A seventeenth-century hand has written a number of satirical comments and verses below and above some of the the miniatures. In his catalogue, Kålund ( Katalog II s. 476 ) suggested that the hand is the one of the Icelander Páll Hallson, employed by Jørgen Seefeldt in his library at Ringsted from 1653, on the following pages:
Contemporary binding: Wooden boards covered in brown calfskin decorated with lines and stamps, 103 mm x 68 mm x 47 mm . Binding and restoration: At an earlier date, the spine has been replaced; younger sewing supports also show that the leaves once have been re-attached. Blind tooling: Right-angled lines divide the boards in six panels each. It is possible to identify two different stamps, a rosette and a cross. Locking device: On the lower board there are the remains of the two metal fastenings of two clasps. The book is sewn on three sewing supports (double cords). The outer spine has been repaired at an earlier date. Fly-leaves: The board-papers (parchment) have losened from the binding. First fly-leaf of parchment. Bookblock: The leaves have been trimmed, and fragments of yellow colour occur on the fore-edge.
A slip in Árni Magnússon's hand inserted between the first fly-leaf and fol. 1r states the acquisition of the manuscript: Ex auctione Rostgardiana | Numerus Manuscriptorum | 352.
The Manuscript is written in Denmark. It has not been written before 1514 (1517) as ten of the prayers are copied from Christiern Pedersen's Book of Hours Vor Frue Tider that was published in Paris in 1514, and in Leipzig in 1517. The origin of the prayer book is unknown, but Marine (Maren) Jespersdatter was presumably the first owner. Pil Dahlerup writes that the prayer book must have had a connection with the Birgittine tradition (cf. Dansk literatur: Middelalder s. 165 ), but that has been rejected by Britta Olrik Frederiksen (most recently in Alvíssmál, 2001 s. 93 ). The historian Troels Dahlerup has suggested that Marine Jespersdatter could have been the daughter of the nobleman Jesper Friis (✝ 1504) of Lundby and Hesselager on Funen (cf. Dahlerup, Gyldendal og Politikens Danmarkshistorie 6 s. 321 ). The problem with this hypothesis is that the daughter of Jesper Friis was called Mette, and not Maren (cf. the genealogical tables in Danmarks Adels Aarbog 3 [1886] s. 125, and Danmarks Adels Aarbog 59 [1942] s. 56 ). Mette Jespersdatter Friis had two sisters, who were nuns in the Benedictine convent in Dalum, and was married to Claus Urne (✝ 1531) of Hindemae on Fyn, who himself had two brothers who had taken holy orders. It is probably this connection to a convent and church environment that has given Troels Dahlerup the idea. Mette Friis died childless in 1531.
Marine Jespersdatter could also have been a member of the Lunov family. If this is so, she may have been Maren Jespersdatter Lunov (lived 1538), engaged and later married to Busk Skenk (✝ 1551) of Brudager and Rygård province (cf. Landbohistorisk Selskabs Adkomstregistrering 1513-1550, Afdeling for Navneforskning, Nordisk Forskningsinstitut).
Among the earlier owners of the manuscript were Jørgen Seefeldt and Frederik Rostgaard. The name Oluf Nielsen occurs in the prayer on fol. 103r. On the verso side of the front fly-leaf the following names are written with a hand from the sixteenth century: her berent pauuel | zw rostock: | Laurentius Kerchoff | doctor de juri: and below: Reliqiæ ex bibliothecis Nobilissimi Domini Georgij Sefellt., followed by punctsade gunnar galle.
The manuscript was acquired by Árni Magnússon at Frederik Rostgaard's auction in 1726, at a price of 1 rigsdaler, 1 mark and 4 sk. skilling, as stated in AM 274 8vo, fol. 9r.
