Ólafs saga helga with Miracles ; Iceland, 1300-1325

Athugasemd
After Konráð Gíslason's death in 1891 it transpired that two conjoint leaves originally belonging to the manuscript had been in his possession. Catalogued as KG 1, item 2785 in Konráð Gíslason's Collection (KatalogII598 ). When these two leaves were joined together with the manuscript, they were foliated as 32bis and 32ter. A number of miracles were added after the saga, the end of which is now missing. Fol. 6ra:1-11 was effaced and one of those miracles, The Danish and the Norwegian Boy was added. Fol. 93r begins in the middle of the miracle The Epileptic Woman.

Kveraskipan

The manuscript once consisted of 14 gatherings of 8 leaves each.

  • I-IV: fols 1-32..
  • V: only the conjoint leaves, 32bis and 32ter, are extant.
  • VI: fols 33-36; four leaves are missing; one at the beginning and one at the end of the quire, respectively.

Ástand

The lower part of fol. 1 is torn away. Fols 32bis and 32ter have been used as binding and the upper lines have been excised. Fols 34, 38 and 43 are also damaged by excision, and Árni Magnússon has filled in some effaced letters. The manuscript is defective in several places.

Skrifarar og skrift

Written in an Icelandic Gothic bookhand.

Skreytingar

  • On fol. 1rb:20-29 after the prologue, the remainder of a major initial (H), a littera florissa, can be found. Most of it is torn out.
  • On fol. 43va:15-22 the column has been damaged through excision, but the outer side of a major initial K can be found.

On fol. 6ra:12-20 after The Danish and Norwegian Boy there is a major initial. Inside the initial a lamb gambols inside a spiral of branches and foliage. The initial extends down the left margin ending in another spiral of branches with leaves.

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

  • Fol. 1r is covered in probationes pennae and other scribblings, including a letter formula: þeim godum monnum sem þetta bref sia eda heyra senda repeated a number of times.

Uppruni og ferill

Uppruni

The manuscript was written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund has dated it to the second half of the fourteenth century ( KatalogIs. 554), whereas Jonna Louis-Jensen ( To håndskrifter fra det nordvestlige Island s. 219) has dated it to the first quarter of the fourteenth century.

Ferill

  • The first known owner of the codex is Daði Bjarnason of Skarð in Skarðströnd, an ancestor of Árni Gúðmundsson (from Hóll) in Bíldudalur. A marginal note on fol. 94v reads: Dadi Biarna son a | þessa olafs sogu.
  • Árni Magnússon also noted in AM 435 a 4to, fol. 42v, that the manuscript belonged to Árni Gúðmundsson from Bíldudalur and his ancestors: er komin fra Arna Gudmundzsyne | i Billdudal hvers langfedga eign | hun hafde vered.
  • Árni Gúðmundsson gave it to Jón Erlendsson who at that time lived in Garpsdalur and later at Kambur in Króksfjörður (Barðaströnd).
  • The next owner was the Danish prefect Christian Müller of Bessastaðir (in Iceland 1688-1703, ✝ 1720). Torfi Jónsson of Flatey acted as an intermediary who tricked the book from Jón Erlendsson by promising him money for it, which he never paid.
Árni Magnússon notes that when in the possession of Jón Erlendsson only four leaves were missing from the codex, and that the lacuna was filled in with leaves with text written by Jón Ólafsson of Lambavatn. The three leaves (the number four must be a mistake) are now preserved in AM 325 XI 2 4to . Árni presumed that the great loss of text happened when it was owned by Christian Müller, because Árni borrowed a printed book from Müller where some leaves of the manuscript served as a binding for it. Árni then replaced the leaves and kept them.

According to one of the AM-slips and AM 435 a, 4to; fols 35-36 once belonged to Christian Müller at Þingeyrar who gave it to the priest Ólafur Eiríksson of Hjaltastaður who in his turn gave it to Pétur Björnsson yngri, a son of Björn Péturson of Burstarfell.

Árni Magnúson wrote the following in AM 435 a 4to: [42v] Olafs Saga Helga. 4to. | vantar mikid ï. hana hefi eg | feinged af Amtmanni Muller. | er komin fra. Arna Gudmundzsyne | i Billdudal, hvers langfedga eign | hun hafde vered. Árni Magnússon did not succeed in gathering all the leaves that existed. Two conjoint leaves (32bis and 32ter) seem to have been kept on Iceland, but were taken to Copenhagen by the student Högni Einarsson who matriculated at the University of Copenhagen in 1828. He gave them to another Icelandic student, Þorsteinn Helgason, who at that time was working on the edition of Fornmanna sögur. On fol. 32bisr the following is written: Mig foræret af Studios. Hogni Einarsson. 1828. Th. Helgason and deinde possessor St. Th. The history of the conjoint leaves fol. 32bis and 32ter remained unknown until the death of Konráð Gíslason, when his collection of manuscripts was transferred to The Arnamagnæan Collection.

Aðföng

Árni Magnússon got the codex from different places:

  • The majority of the manuscript comes from the Prefect Christian Müller, and Árni notes in AM 345 a 4to, fol. 42v, that a large part is missing: Olafs Saga Helga. 4to. | vantar mikid ï. hana hefi eg | feinged af Amtmanni Muller. He also acquired some leaves from the prefect at the Alþing in 1704 (fol. 46r): Nockur bld þarur feck eg af | Amtmanni 1704. ä Alþinge.
  • Two years later, in 1706, he acquired fols 35-36 from the son of Björn Pétursson of Burstarfell, Pétur Björnsson (fol. 46v): Tv bld ur þessarre smu Olafs | sgu Helga, fieck eg 1706. af Petre | yngra Birnssyni (fra Bustar-|felle). A similar account is found on one of the AM-slips: Þesse 2. bld feck eg | 1706. af syne Birns | Peturssonar ä Bustar-|felle, enn honum hafde | þau feinged Sera Olafr | Eiriksson ä Hiallta|stad.
  • Fols 32bis and 32ter were transferred to The Arnamagnæan Collection from The Konráð Gíslason Collection.
