The manuscript has been paginated 1bis-45, starting from the second leaf where the text begins. The first leaf, which Kristian Kålund refers to as a fly-leaf in his catalogue, has been foliated 1a by Kålund.

I-III.8: all the leaves are bifolia.

Written in two columns of 39 lines per page (38 lines on fols 3r, 12r and 15r). Ruling with a stylus by horizontal and vertical lines in columns and lines. The division of the lawbook into three books appears at the top of the written area as running titles: L I, L II and L III, arranged with the letter L (liber) on the verso page and the roman number on the recto page. Rubrics are in red, with the corresponding roman numerals for the chapters also written in red ink in the margins.

The text of the oath formula on 1ar is now faded and illegibe, but a copy can be found on the accompaning slip b.

Skrifarar og skrift

Hand I comprises fols 1ra to 7v:ra and is written in dark brown ink in a distinct early gothic bookhand from the beginning of the fourteenth century.

The rest of the text (fols 7vb to 23ra) is written in hand II in light brown ink, a hand very similar to hand I. According to Peter Skautrup, there is a change in hand as well as in source on fol. 7v. This change can be observed mainly in the language of text but also palaeographically. An explanation might be found in the marginal note scriptor sit sanus at the bottom of the page; the scribe (I) had become ill and a new scribe (II) continued the copying using a different source.

This younger hand who has written the formula on fol. 1 a in gold ink has been described as a fracture (i.e. a younger gothic bookhand) from c. 1400.

There are flourished initials varying in blue and red.

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

Marginalia occur on the following folia in the manuscript: fols 3r-4r, 5r, 6r, 7v, 13r, 18r and 22r, among which are some personal names. On fol. 3r the editor Peter Skautrup has been able to read the name Magnus sacerdos . Between the second and third line in the left column on fol. 13r it says: nicolaus piler. On fol. 18r is written in the right margin: Dilecto amico suo domio th sacerdotí, and in the final rubric on fol. 22r the following note has been added: Dilecto amico suo N bundoni taliloco comemoranti J | bundo salutem et dilectionem .

The manuscript was bound in 1886 and then rebound in maí 1936 by Carl Lund in a half binding with spine covering from brown marbled skin and grey paper to cover the boards. According to a note by Jón Helgason on the first fly-leaf, the previous binding, which no longer exists, had been a simple binding dating from 1886, i.e. presumably a half binding with black cloth spine and marbled paper-cover bound by Otto Ehlert. The first and the last page of the bookblock are dirty and might have served as coverleaves before binding. The size of the binding is 444 mm x 304 mm.

There are two slips, called a and b by Kristian Kålund, glued to the pastedown of the upper board:

  • The first, a, is a slip in Árni Magnússon's hand reading: Su gamla Danska | lgbok er JustitzR. | Rostgaard feck af | Chr. | Worm, var fra Doct. | Omeises enke. | bokenn er skíon i folio.
  • The second, b, provides a copy of the oath formula from fol. 1ar: Quilibet recipiendvs in Canonicum sic jurabit. Sic me deus adiuuet et sancta | dei euangelia. Skautrup, Lex Iutiae s. 3 Facsimilie The same formula is found in the cartulary from Ribe from around 1290, the so-called Avia Ripensis (Ribe Stiftkistes Dipl. I. Suppl. 48).

Uppruni og ferill

Written in Sønderjylland (southern Jutland) c. 1320, the manuscript's origin is connected to the Chapter of Ribe. It has been suggested that some of the personal names written in the margins of manuscript can be identified as being the same persons also mentioned in the Avia Ripensis. The names are:

Considering the evidence of the oath formula on fol. 1ar, the manuscript probably belonged to the Chapter of Ribe and judging from its large format - it is the only extant Old Danish law manuscript in folio - may have served as a reference copy in the library. around 1400. According to the information provided by Árni Magnússon, it was later owned by Dr Omeis (1642-94) who was the district doctor in Ribe from 1681-94. He was married to Elisabeth Kragelund (1652-1733), the daughter of Peder Kragelund (1602-81) who became the bishop of Ribe in 1650. Elisabeth was also the widow of the doctor Ludvig Pouch (1620-81), whom Omeis had succeeded. Pouch collected books and, being the district doctor of Ribe, he also acted as the notary of the Chapter and thus came into possession of the manuscript from the Chapter's library. Subsequently Christian Worm (1672-1737) acquired the manuscript which he presented to Frederik Rostgaard (1671-1745).

Árni Magnússon acquired the manuscript from Frederik Rostgaard. He may have purchased it at Rostgaard's auction in 1726.
