The leaves are paginated by a later hand at the top, between the columns.

The fragments are written in double columns with 35 lines per column. Rubrics in red. Flourished initials in various colours.

Several of the leaves are damaged as they previously were used as covers for books. The bottom part of fol. 10 is missing. Some of the leaves are so blackened and worn that reading them is difficult.

Written by a single scribe; the script is Icelandic Gothic bookhand.

The title (Barlaams saga) appear on the top rectos of fols 1-10 + 12s and at the bottom of fol. 11r. Scribbles occur in the margins throughout the manuscript.

There are three AM-slips:

• The first, concerning fols 1-5 reads: Ur Barlaams Sỏgu | 5. blỏd. | komin fra Sr Olafi Gud-|mundzsyne.
• The second, concerning fols 6-7 reads: Ur Barlaams Sỏgu. | fra Sr Snorra Jonssyne 1721.
• The third, concerning fols 8-9 reads: fra Sr Þorvalldi | Stephanssyne. | 1704. | Einn madr tti hundrat | sauda.

Written in Iceland c. 1400.

According to the AM-slips the following leaves belonged to the following people:

• Fols 1-5 to the priest Ólafur Guðmundsson,
• Fols 6-7 to the priest Snorri Jónsson.
• In the seventeenth century fols 8-9 belonged to Munkaþverá and later a priest called Þorvaldur Stefánsson.
• Fols 11-12 belonged to the priest Hannes Halldórsson of Reykholt.

According to the AM-slips and the marginal notes on fols 8r and 11v Árni Magnússon acquired

• fols 1-5 from Ólafur Guðmundsson,
• fols 6-7 from Snorri Jónsson in 1721,
• fols 8-9 from Þorvaldur Stefánsson in 1704
• and fols 11-12 from Hannes Halldórsson of Reykholt

Written in double columns with 35 lines per column. Traces of red initials (majuscules). The initial G is rubricated in red ink. The rubrics are faded.

The upper part of the outer column has been torn off.

Fragment II is written in an Icelandic Gothic bookhand. The hand is identical to the one of fragment IX and these two fragments possibly originally belonged to the same manuscript.

Fol. 1r hos additions referring to the manuscript itself: II (AM 231. fol.) and Barlaams saga. 230. fol. 19-20b. written in the bottom margin.

Written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund ( KKKat ) dated it to the fourteenth century. Magnus Rindal ( Barlaams ok Josaphats saga 1981 s. 31 ) har dog dateret det mere præcist til fourteenth centurys første halvdel.

Written in double columns with 35 lines to each column (18 on fol. 4). Red initials (majuscules) and rubrics.

Only the top 18 lines of fol. 4 are extant and the text is only partly legible due to holes in the parchment.

Fragment III is written by a single scribe who also wrote the fragment Holm Perg 13 VI fol.. The hand is an Icelandic Gothic bookhand. The two fragments presumably were part of the same codex.

The title (Barlaams saga) and references to leaves are written in the bottom margins of fols 1r and 2r and in the top margins of fols 3r and 4r. Occasional scribbles and single words.

Written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund ( KKKat ) dated the manuscript to the fourteenth century. Rindal, however, dated it more precisely to the first half of the fourteenth century ( NT4 s. 32 ).

Fol. 1r is foliated by a later hand.

Written in double columns with 34 lines to each column. The scribe has let blank spaces for initials and rubrics.

The title (Barlaams saga) is written in the bottom margin of the leaf. Only a few words are written in the other margins.

Written in Iceland in the fifteenth century.

Fols 1 to 3 are foliated by a later hand in the upper right-hand corners.

The fragment is written in two columns with 42 lines per column. Rubrics in red.

All of the leaves are damaged:

• Fol. 1 has holes in the top margin and along the inner margin.
• Fol. 2 has holes too; the top margin is cut off and the middle part of the inner column is torn off.
• There is a large amount of holes on fol. 3 too and the top margin and the inner column are cut away.

Fragment V is written in an Icelandic Gothic bookhand. This fragment and Holm Perg 12 V fol. seem to be written by the same scribe and it is very likely that the two fragments are two parts of the same codex. Keyser and Unger ( BarlJos1851 s. xxi ) describe the hand as old and beautiful.

A later hand added the title (Barlaams saga) in the bottom margins of the recto pages.

There is an AM-slip reading: Ur Barlaams Sỏgu | fra Sr Snorra Jonssyne | 1721.

According to fragment V's AM-slip Árni Magnússon acquired fol. 2 from his nephew, the priest Snorri Jónsson of Helgafell, in 1721.

Written in double columns with 37 lines per column. Spor af initialer (majuskler) i forskellige farver; spor af røde rubrikker.

Both leaves are damaged and holed.

There are a few additions:

• Top margin of fol. 1r: I Naffne fauður og sonar Og H Anda | Heylagx.
• In the bottom margins of the recto pages the title (Barlaams saga) is written.
• In the bottom margin of fol. 2v,Árni Magnússon skrevet Fra Skeliavík i Steingrimsfirde.

Written in Norway. Kålund dated this part to the fourteenth century ( KKKat ). Rindal, however, dated it more precicely to c. 1350 ( NT4 s. *42 ).

According to a note on fol. 2v by Árni Magnússon he acquired the fragment from Skeljavík in Steingrímsfjörður.

The bottom part of both leaves is cut off.

The title (Barlaams saga) is indsat af en senere hånd i bl. 1r og 2r's øverste margen.

There is an AM-slip: Fra Capitain Magnuſe Araſyne | 1727. og hafdi hann þeſſe blỏd | feinged ur Iſafiardar Syſlu. | Eru ur Sỏgu Barlaams.

The bifolium is written in Iceland. Kålund dated them to the fourteenth century ( KKKat ). Rindal, however, dated it more precisely to the first quarter of the fourteenth century ( NT4 s. *43 ).

Ifølge oplysningen på AM-sedlen har de to blade tilhørt kaptajn Magnús Arason, som i sin tid fik dem fra Ísafjarðarsýsla.

Árni Magnússon acquired the fragmant from Magnús Arason in 1727.

A Letter from the priest Franz Íbsson of Hrúni in Árnessýsla to an Erlendur Ólafsson (dated 30. ágúst 1728) is attached and kept as accompanying materialfor AM 231 X fol.

Written in Iceland in the fifteenth century.

According to the letter from Franz Ibsson he sent this leaf to Árni Magnússon in Copenhagen in 1728.
