Umbrot

The manuscript is written in long lines with the number of lines per page varying from 31-35 lines; generally, there are 34 lines per line. Rubrics in red, whereas majuscules occur in varying colours.

Ástand

The codex have various defects. Fol. 1 is torn and a great part of the bottom is torn away; the lost text is added by Árni Magnússon on a slip pasted between ff. 1 and 2. Furthermore the first 1 1/2 of the first leaf is copied and pasted to f. 1r. A part of f. 23 has likewise been torn away. There are the following lacunae:

  • after f. 6: 1 leaf
  • after f. 36: 1 leaf
  • after f. 38: 1 leaf
  • after f. 46: 8-9 leaves
  • after f. 50: 1 leaf
  • after f. 53: 9 or 10
  • after f. 54: c. 5 leaves
  • after f. 55: c. 20
  • after f. 64: 1 leaf
The manuscript ends defective.

Skrifarar og skrift

The manuscript is mainly written in one hand throughout, with the exception of two hands that has written the two last lines of f. 44r, and the seven last lines of f. 48v, respectively. A fourth hand has provided the manuscript with headings.

There are two slips written in Árni Magnússon's hand.

  • The first, a paper-slip reads: Þessa Barlaams Sỏgu hefe eg feinged ur Skagafirde ä Islande. 3 blỏd ur henne hefe eg sidan feinged fra einum i Skagafirde. voro Convulut utan um bök og bref. 2. blỏsidan post annum 1702. nærre Skalhollte. Sagde sä er mier feck, ad þau være nordan ad komen. Mier þyker hỏnden ä þessari bok, lik hendi Magnuss Þorkellssonar, Gudbiartzsonar.
  • The second, a thin slip of parchment has: þetta er hit fyrsta kverit framanaf |Barlaams Sỏgu.

Uppruni

The manuscript is written in Iceland in the second half of the fourteenth century ( Seip 1954 130, 132 ) and Rindal 1981 ).

Ferill

In his catalogue of Icelandic parchment manuscripts, now catalogued as AM 435 a 4to, Árni Magnússon writes that the codex once belonged to Eggert Jónsson of Akrar: Er komin til min ur Skagafirde. Bökina hefur fyrr ätta Eggert Jonsson ä ỏkrum. Er in folio minori.

Aðföng

Árni Magnússon got the most part of the codex from Skagafjörður. Later he got three leaves having served as envelopes and binding for books, also from Skagafjörður. After 1702 he acquired two other leaves from Skállholt.
