Paper. Every other leaf is an additional blank inserted leaf, made of different paper. Watermarks: The coat of arms of Amsterdam (two versions); a Beehive watermark with no text on the plinth; initials "WH"; the text "Zoonen".

i + 281 + 1 leaves, including the blank inserted leaves. Size of leaves: 193 mm x 152 mm
Foliation

The leaves that contain text are paginated 1-279 while the additional blank leaves are not. Fol. 1-v is blank, 2r-v contains text and is paginated 1-2, 3r-v is blank, 4r-v contains text and is paginated 3-4, etc.

Collation
The paginated leaves have quire signatures from A on f. 2r (and A2 on f. 4r) to Kk3 on f. 278r. There are catchwords on the verso page of each written leaf.
Layout

The text is written in one column with 27-29 lines per page.

Condition

The inserted blank leaf between f. 278 (pp. 277-278) and 279 (p. 279) is missing.

Script

Written by Jakob Sigurðsson. The main text is written in cursive. The headings are in fraktur.

Decoration

Illuminated 15-lines-tall initial "M" on f. 2r.

Smaller 2-lines-tall flourished initials at the beginnings of chapters.

Additions

  • P. 193: Þetta skiedi Anno Xtj. 1010 eru nu sijdann 760 aar.
  • The letter "W" in the margins to denote poetry in the text, for example, pp. 45, 157, 206, 209 etc.

Binding

Fully bound bound in a light brown leather binding.

The spine has six panels, five of them are gilded with a floral motif, one has the embossed title NIALA.

The pastedown is made of marbled paper (red, blue, and white).

History

Origin

Written in Norður-Skálanes in Eastern Iceland, 1770.

Acquisition

The Arnamagnæan Collection in Copenhagen purchased the manuscript in the summer of 2002 in the "Søren Vangsgaards antikvariat".
