Layout

  • The text is written in one column with 32-33 lines per page and 7-12 words per line.
  • The written area measures ca. 270 mm x 145-150 mm.

Condition

The leaves are in good condition and hardly dirty. Only around the edges is there a slight discolouration.

Script

Written by Ásgeir Jónsson.

Decoration

The first initial spans ca. 3 lines and is decorated with additional lines on the ascender.

Most initials were written larger (1-2 lines) and are slightly decorated by means of loops and curls.

There is a medium large tail-piece on fol. 139v resembling an infinity sign with an additional loop.

On the edges there is bright red colouring.

Additions

There are very few later additions in the margins (e.g. on fol. 4r). Some of them are variant readings (e.g. fols. 31r and 33r).

Binding

The binding is a full binding made of parchment. Parchment strips have been laced through the spine fold and there are traces of two stickers for the shelfmark and the running number, which were removed during conservation. They are now kept separately in the box of AM 224 fol. Árni Magnússon has written the title of the saga Thomas saga Erkibikups onto the spine using brown ink. Inside the binding is possibly an old sea map. The front pastedown is made from two different kinds of blank paper. The parchment was reused from another binding and was too small for this manuscript as can be seen on the lower corner on the back, where additional parchment had to be supplied.

Accompanying Material

An AM-slip (157 mm x 112 mm) is attached in front of the manuscript. One of Árni Magnússon's scribes has written on it: Fra Sal. Assessor Thormod Toruesens Enke 1720. And a different hand added: Num. 1

History

Origin

The manuscript was written in Norway, where Torfæus had it written by his scribe Ásgeir Jónsson at some point between 1690-1697 (: Már Jónsson 2009 p. 285).

Provenance

Árni Magnússon received the manuscript as a gift from Torfæus's widow after his death in 1720.
