Band

The manuscript is bound a halfbinding with blue tape on the spine and corners and brown marbled paper (tree root) on the front and back cover. On the spine, there are golden binding lines dividing the spine into 5 fields. In the second field, there is the following title engraved in golden letters: „Varia Exscripta Chronici Grönlandici cum tïtulis manu A. MAGNÄI adscriptis“. In the lowest field, there is a crowned national arms of Denmark (three lions) supported by two savages with bludgeons. Hanging below, there is the Order of the Elephant. The binding stems from the time when the manuscript was part of the collection in the Royal Library in Copenhagen (cf. binding type and decoration).

The manuscript was for some time part of the collection in the Royal Library in Copenhagen under the shelfmark NkS 1961 4to. In April 1888, the manuscript was returned.

The manuscript is in quite poor condition. The material is very thin and there are many small holes.

Most leaves show older repairs (by means of attaching paper and glassine).

Umbrot

  • The manuscript is written in one column with 25 to 28 lines per page and 11 to 15 words per line.
  • The dimensions of the written area are ca. 150-160 mm x 125-130 mm.
  • On fol. 20v, only 9 lines were written, leaving the bottom half of the page without text. The text continues on fol. 21r.

On fol. 20v, there is some writing consisting of two words perpendicular to the writing direction of the text. This could be a name or signature.

Fylgigögn

An AM-slip (183 mm x 143 mm) is located in front of the manuscript. Árni Magnússon wrote on it: „Fra Monsieur Þorleifi Arasyne til läns 1711. i Augusto.“

A later hand wrote „No 1“ in pencil onto the AM-slip.

On fol. 24v is a large decorated initial ("I") that marks the beginning of a new text. Unlike the text, the initial is not crossed-out. Its size corresponds to 9 lines of text. An almost identical initial is found in the same location in AM 779 c III 4to (30v).

Fylgigögn

An AM-slip (194 mm x 147 mm) is attached to the first page of the manuscript. Árni Magnússon wrote on it: „Grænlands=chronica utlögd af Jone Olafssyne Ost=india=fara.“ Below, another hand has added: „Ur bök i 4to sem Eg keypte 1710. af Jörunne i ytra Hiardardal i Önundar firde, konu Jons Steindorssonar yngra. Er med hende Steindors Ormssonar. A.M.“

A later hand has added „No 2“ in pencil.

On fol. 30v is a large decorated initial ("I") that marks the beginning of a new text. Its size correlates to 7 lines of text. An almost identical initial is found in the same location in AM 779 c II 4to (24v).

There are two AM-slips in front of the manuscript.
  • On AM-slip a (193 mm x 154 mm) Árni Magnússon has written: „Grænlands-chronika utlögd ur þeirre Dönsku af Jone Olafs syne ost-india fara.“ A later hand has added „No 4“ in pencil.
  • AM-slip b (98 mm x 70 mm) reads as follows (in the hand of Árni Magnússon): „Min. feingen fra Stad i Sugandafirdi.“

An AM-slip (190 mm x 153 mm) is kept with the manuscript. Árni Magnússon wrote on it: „Grænlandz-Kronika | Ur bok Sera Jons Torfasonar ä Breidabolstad, og heyrir honum til nu 1721 hun mier til.“

A later hand wrote „No 7“ in pencil onto the AM-slip.

Another hand wrote „5“ in black ink onto the AM-slip.

This slip belongs to the last item, i.e. part IV, as is indicated in a note at the bottom of the slip: „Á við IV hér framan“.
