Ástand

The manuscript opens and ends defectively; fol 83 has been cut to such an extent that only a small strip of vellum near the spine is left, and there are lacunae after fols 86 and 87: Due to mouldering, there are also small holes in the parchment.

Umbrot

Headings are in red and initials are in red and blue.

Skrifarar og skrift

Written by three or four scribes. Being written in a smaller script than the surrounding text, Widding assumes that the Guspjallsgrein um sdmannin at the bottom of f. 56v is a later addition by a fourth hand, whereas Louis-Jensen counts only three hands.

The first scribe has written fols 1r-55r; Parva pars oculi dextri sacerdos.

The second scribe wrote fols 55v-62v. This scribe also wrote the following note on fols 55v: „les betur enn skrifat er kir fadir ok seg halfridi goda notth“, and 56r: „amen. jllt er blekit enn vera skrifit barbara and 62v“. Louis-Jensen suggests that the Hallfrur mentioned on fol. 55v could be identical with Hallfrur rardttir, cousin and prvebtukona of the farmer Gsli Filippusson at Hagi Bararstrnd.

The third scribe wrote fols. 63-88.

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

Fols. 63-88 did not originally belong to the manuscript; they are later additions. A note on f. 62v: „latu koma sel sknit gamall ok nyr prettari ok lat eigi frgd na iona prettum“, indicates that the writer found the manuscript ready for binding. On the bottom of fol. 86v, there is an illumination of a human head.

Uppruni og ferill

Uppruni

Written in Iceland. Kålund (Katalog bindi II s. 82) dates the manuscript to the fifteenth century; his dating was later adopted by Widding (AM 672 4to - en skyggetilværelse s. 344), Kirby (Biblical Quotation in Old Icelandic-Norwegian Religious Literature: Text) and by A Dictionary of Old Norse Prose (Indices s. 461). orvarur Bjarnarson (Leifar s. XIII), however, dated it to the middle of the fifteenth century. On the basis of an identification of the Hallfrur mentioned on fol. 55v (see above) Louis-Jensen („Seg Hallfri ga ntt“ s. 150) hypotehesises that fols. 55r-62v were written by Gsli Filipusson's son for his father after 1479, the year in which Hallfrur rardttir and her husband Jn lafsson passed on the farm Both in Patreksfjrur to Gsli Filipusson. On the basis of this hypothesis, Wolf (The Old Norse-Icelandic Legend of Saint Barbara s. 113) suggests that the manuscript was written in the last two or three decades of the fifteenth century.

Ferill

According to Árni Magnsson's account in AM 435 a, 4to, f. 27v, the manuscript has belonged to The church of Sklholt: „Bokin hefur fyrrum vered eign Skalholltskirkiu, o alldri stadid i neinu registre ar“
