Parchment.
The manuscript is foliated in red ink in the bottom margins by Kristian Kålund.
The book starts in gathering V:
Written in long lines throughout with 23 to 33 lines per page. Rubrics in red; the initials of the law sections are in red and green; the chapter initials are red or (occasionally) green/red. On fol. 43v there is a light brown/red initial.
The entire manuscript is written in a Gothic bookhand.
A later hand has written fol. 46v and the marginal notes.
On fol. 44r, below the text, the writer has added: Huer sæm þessa bok a þa bidi firer sæm ritaðe hona. | Qui pro alio orat prosemet ipse laborat.
There are also marginala written by the second hand. These are, however, defect due to trimming.
The book was once bound in an old sea chart (parchment) on which the words ASIAE PARS can be seen.
There is an AM-slip in Árni Magnússon's hand saying: F. er Gulaþings Lgbok eda Borgarþings Lgbok (þvi þat stendr so vixl ï | bokini) Bokin er a membrana i 4to. ei illa skrifud. vantar miked | framan vid. hana hefi eg feinged | af Jone Þorsteinssyni.
The manuscript was written in Norway. Jón Sigurðsson ( Dipl. Isl. I s. xxii, 648 ) and Storm ( NgL IV s. 557 ) have both dated the original part of the manuscript (fols 1r-46r) to c. 1350. Kålund's dating: The fourteenth century ( Katalog I s. 381 ). The text on fol. 46v has been dated to c. 1450 by Storm (ibid.) and to the fifteenth century by Kålund (ibid.).
On the AM-slip Árni Magnússon states that he got the manuscript from a Jón Þorsteinsson.
