Lýsing á handriti

Blaðefni
Paper with two different watermarks. The watermark on the original leaves is found in the second quire, in the middle of the bifolios 4+7 and 5+6. This watermark is representing a fool's cap and is similar to the one used by Gerrit Pietersz van der Ley in 1674-1675. A countermark for this watermark could not be discerned due to repair of the leaves. The second watermark appears in the center of the front flyleaves (1 bifolium) representing the coat of arms of Amsterdam.
Blaðfjöldi
ii + 7. 205 mm x 160 mm
Tölusetning blaða

Later foliation in grey ink in the upper right-hand corners of the recto-pages.

Kveraskipan

The manuscript consists of two quires:

  • I: fols. 1-3 (1, 2, 3): The first three leaves are singletons, the second and third were subsequently joined together during conservation.
  • II: fols. 4-7 (4+7, 5+6)

No quire signatures. Catchwords on every page.
Umbrot

The manuscript is written in one column with 24 to 26 lines per page and 10 to 15 words a line

The dimensions of the written area are ca. 150 mm x 120 mm.

Ástand

The leaves are damaged around the edges and have been reapired with white Japanese tissue.

The edges are untrimmed.

Skrifarar og skrift

The manuscript is written by one unidentified scribe using chancery script.

Skreytingar

Black penwork initials of varying size. The largest (on fol. 1r) takes up six lines, the smallest only one (e.g. on fol. 5v). Most initials are pen-flourished.

Each chapter ends with a small, cross or tailpiece. There are three small tailpieces at the end of the text before the final rubric on 7r.

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

On fol. 1r, the number (30) was scribbled in brown ink in the right-hand margin, near line 18.

On fol. 3v, the note R.B.C.K.(?) Domserfed verjanda og sækjanda was added in light brown ink in the outer margin.

Fol. 5r displays a NB Verd fyrer brigdada jord, in dark brown ink in in the outer margin.

Band

Cardboard binding covered in handmade paper in a light colour. On the front cover No 59 A. is added in black ink. Originally, the letter was B., but was crossed out using grey ink and replaced with the A.. Below, Odals Bälkr is written in black ink. On the upper pastedown, Kålund wrote: 7 bl (+ i AMsk seddel) and the date 24. júlí 1888. In addition to that, the shelfmark ist repeated twice in later hands on the upper pastedown.

Stored in one box with AM 59 b 4to. The same box also contain old cords and narrow paper strips, which were removed from the binding during restoration.

Fylgigögn

A bifolium (185 mm x 142 mm) from Árni Magnússon's time (now bound as front flyleaves). On the recto-side of the second fly leaf, Árni Magnússon wrote: Ur bök sem fyrrum hefr ätt Magnus Jons son lỏgmadur, enn eg feck fra Gudrunu Þorgilsdöttur.

Uppruni og ferill

Uppruni

The manuscript was probably written in Iceland and is a copy of AM 69 4to (see Storm: Norges gamle Love IV s. 546). Kålund (Katalog I s. 378) dated it to the end of the seventeenth century.

Ferill

It is uncertain whether the bifolium from Árni Magnússon's time belongs to this copy or rather to AM 59 b 4to, it is thus unknown which manuscript the given information on the provenance applies to (see also Storm: Norges gamle LoveIV s. 546 ).

A similar account telling that Árni Magnússon bought a larger manuscript from Guðrún Þorgilsdóttir in 1710 is given on a slip in AM 213 a 4to.
