Lýsing á handriti

Blaðefni
Paper with watermark. The watermark shows two coats of arms, one on top of the other. The upper one has the arms of the Palatinate and Bavaria, whereas the lower shield shows a crowned man's head with the letters I and S (e.g., fols. 1 and 8, 3 and 6, 9 and 14, 11 and 12.). There is no countermark.
Blaðfjöldi
14. 181 mm x 140-145 mm.
Tölusetning blaða

There is later foliation in grey ink in the upper right corner of every folio: 1-14.

Kveraskipan

The manuscript consists of two quires.

  • I: fols. 1-8 (1 + 8, 2+7, 3+6, 4+5)
  • II: fols. 9-14 (9+14, 10+13, 11+12)

There is a catchword in the bottom right corner of most pages. Exceptions are 2v, 8r, and 12v.
Ástand

The outer margins are severely damaged (bite marks on the lower outer edges). The damage most certainly postdates the trimming of the leaves but predates the binding.

The lower margin of fol. 9 is also slightly damaged.

The upper outer corner of fol. 11 has been repaired by means of Japanese paper.

A piece of paper was once attached to the outer margin of fol. 1r, but is now mostly removed.

Some leaves are stained.

The leaves a slighlty discoloured, mostly around the edges.

Umbrot

The manuscript is written in one column with 15 to 17 lines per page and 4 to 6 words per line.

The dimensions of the written area are ca. 130 mm x 85-90 mm.

Skrifarar og skrift

The whole manuscript was written by one unknown scribe. The main text is written in kurrent script, while rubrics are written in chancery.

Skreytingar

There are penfourished initials in the rubrics and at the beginning of sections executed with black ink (1-2 lines). Most of these initials in the rubrics are decorated with squiggles and fine loops (e.g. 1r, line 1). The beginning of each paragraph is marked by differently decorated initials which partly resemble the initials used for the headings (1-3 lines, e.g. 2v, 3r).

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

Marginal bibliographical note on 8r (written by the scrie) refers to the Jutland law, but is partly illegible due to severe damage to the outer margins.

Band

The binding (188 mm x 144-147 mm) is made out of handmade grey paper on cardboard. A lable on the upper part of the spine of the manuscript (from Kålund's time) states the shelfmark and the name of the collection. On the lower part of the spine there is the remainder of a white lable that used to show the running number. The covers are slightly dirty and show traces of usage.

On the front board, „No 38. B Skaanske Kirche Loug.“ is written in black ink. Orignally, the letter of the shelfmark was „A“, but was later crossed out at substituted with a superscript „B“ in lighter brown ink.

The manuscript is stored in one box together with AM 38 a 4to.

Fylgigögn

Old threads from the binding are stored in the same box as the manuscript.

Uppruni og ferill

Uppruni

Judging from the language and the subject of the manuscript's text, the manuscript was most certainly written in Denmark. Kålund: Katalog bindi I s. 365 dates it to the 17th century. Narrower dating information provided by Schlyter: Corpus juris Sveo-Gotorum antiqui: Codex juris Scanici bindi IX s. xcix, who dates it to the middle of the 17th century.

Ferill

At some point part of a larger manuscript, later divided into two units: AM 38 a 4to and AM 38 b 4to.

Number „38 in 4to“was recorded in Jón Ólafsson's catalogue (1730) as one manuscript, but there is no indication of two copies.
