Parchment.
9 gatherings.
Paleographical criteria show that more than one scribe has contributed to the manuscript, but the fluctuation in writing and the gradual transitions often make it impossible to decide whether we are dealing with a change of scribe or with the same scribe using another pen and ink, working at a different tempo or in a different mood, etc. The manuscript can be divided into 58 scribal sittings. See Kroon et al., A Danish Teachers' Manual I s. xix-xxiv for details.
Fol. 15r has a comparative table of roman and arabic numerals between 1 and 1,000,000.
Fol. 15v contains a diagram to show the relationship of the windrose of antiquity to the Germanic system of points of the compass.
The bottom of fol. 16r has a kind of ex libris: a banner of text with flowers inside circles below and the letters F P (abbreviating the owner's name?). The text of the banner reads: ·:Omnia : membra : mea : benedicat : virgo : maria...
Fol. 91v has a symbolic picture of the Creation; a circle divided in three with banners of text surrounding it. The upper half depicts the sun, moon and stars; the two lower halves depict the sea with fish and the land with trees, horses and humans, respectively. The text of the banner reads: Dauit ·: regnum : tuum domine :· regnum :· omnium :· seculorum (Psalms 144:13).
The manuscript has numerous simple illuminations (knots, flowers, animals, pointing fingers etc.), as well as a few initials.
Many of the songs are accompanied by musical notation (square notation).
Written in Denmark. Kristian Kålund dated it to the second half of the fifteenth century, whereas , mens Kroon et al A Danish Teacher's Manual s. ix dated it more precisely to c. 1470. Marius Kristensen ( En Klosterbog fra Middelalderens Slutning s. i ) ascribes the origin of the manuscript to a Dominican house in Denmark. It has so far proved impossible to localise the place of origin of the manuscript, though linguistic traits link the Lucidarius section to Northern Jutland and southwestern Sjælland.
Catalogued 7. janúar 2004 by JA.
The manuscript has been loaned a number of times.
Restored and bound 18 January to 14 April 1964.
