History

Origin

The manuscript was prepared under the direction of Hernando Colón and was written in Seville, Spain, over a period of time in the first half of the sixteenth century, before Hernando Colón's death in 1539.

Provenance

The manuscript was in the possession of Cornelius Pedersen Lerche at the time of his death and is mentioned in the 1682 auction catalogue under folio manuscripts as no. 10 (See Catalogus, p. 166).

It is recorded as “377. De variis authoribus, eorumque scriptis judicia, signatus est liber E. S.” in the old manuscript catalogues of the Arnamagnæan Collection prepared by Jón Ólafsson after Árni Magnússon's death in 1730. The same description is also repeated in Kålund's Katalog, with further explanation in Danish, “Udførligt (ikke nordisk) forfatter-lexicon, på Latin” [Comprehensive dictionary of (non-Nordic) authors, in Latin]. The signature reads “E·.5” and not “E. S.” as previously reported in these catalogues.
