Written in the Faroe Islands in the nineteenth century.

Provenance

The manuscript materials were part of V. U. Hammershaimb's private archive and were originally intended for Det kgl. nordiske Oldskriftselskab. They were given to the Arnamagnæan Collection following Hammershaimb's death in 1909.

History

Origin

Written on the Faroe Islands in the nineteenth century. The final item was recorded from the informant Elsebeth Poulsdatter (Elsebeth í Túni) who had been Schrøter's housekeeper. In the colophon he writes “her nord paa”, referring to Tórshavn, Streymoy, where he moved in 1828, meaning the item cannot have been written before that date.

Clemensen writes in Sandoyarbók that he recorded the ballad from the informant Lauritz Olesen (Læars í Stórhúsi), Dalur, Sandoy, on 16 January 1823.
