History

Origin

Written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund dated it to the first half of the thirteenth century, (KKKat) whereas Gustav Lindblad dated it more precisely the second quarter of the thirteenth century (Lindblad 1952, p. 92).

Provenance

The leaf was used as cover for a small book that belonged to the Priest Þórður Jónsson of Hítardalur and later to Þorsteinn Þórðarson. After that it belonged to some people from Skarð, Skarðsströnd, who gave it to Guðmundur Þorleifsson.

Acquisition

Árni Magnússon got the leaf from Guðmundur Þorleifsson. On the old cover (belonging to this fragment?) Árni writes: “Þetta fragmentum fann eg anno 1725. innani hryggnum ä Iislendsku kvere, er ätt hafde Sr Þordur Jonsson i Hitardal, og epter hann Þorsteinn Þordarson. Kvered var innsaumadad forlage Þorsteins Þordarsonar, þvi innani bandinu voru .2. sendibref til Þorsteins dat. 1673. og 76] anno 1676. eda sidar. feck eg þad af Gudmunde Þorleifssyne ä Eyre, enn hann hafde feinged þad ä Skarde, ad eg þykizt vist vita”.
