Foliation

The manuscript is paginated in the top margins, and foliated in the bottom right hand corners. Traces of an older foliation next to the new one are visible, and prove that the manuscript was once part of a larger codex.

Condition

The manuscript is defective. it begins and ends defective, and there are lacunae after fols 1, 2, 15 and 22. The margins, except the bottom margins, of most leaves have been excised or are otherwise damaged, sometimes with loss of text. Many of the bottom margins have been scraped off, but some marginalia are still visible. Fols 24 and 25 have tears, the outer bottom corner of fol. 29 has been torn away, and fols 34 and 34 are blackened and damaged. The script has been touched up with darker ink in some places.

Layout

Written in one column with 35 to 37 lines per page. Red rubrics and initials, some black initials.

Binding

The manuscript has for some time been bound in two booklets named A and B.

There is one AM-slip that reads: “Ur Elis S?gu .i. blad | Bærings Saga, vantar upp-|hafed. | ur Flovents Sogu mikill | þori. | ur Magus Sogu. | þessa bok feck eg 1706. | af Domino Christiano Wor-|mio, og var hun þa | innbundin.”

History

Origin

Kålund (Katalog vol. I p. 742) dates the manuscript to the first half of the fourteenth century, whereas Seip (Palæografi, B: Norge og Island p. 128) and Konráð Gíslason (Um frum-parta Íslenzkrar túngu í fornöld p. xlvi) date it to the first quarter of the fourteenth centuy. It was written in Iceland and was once part of a larger codex, together with Stock. Perg. 7 4to and leaves now lost.

Acquisition

On fol. 104v in AM 435 a 4to Árni Magnússon wrote: “Bærings Saga fagra, vantar uppha|fed. | ur Flouents S?gu mikill partur. | ur Magus S?gu. mikill hlutr. | 4to med goda gamla skrift. þessa bók feck eg 1706. af Domino Christiano Wormio.” According to this information and to the AM-slip, he got the manuscript in 1706 from Christen Worm.
