History

Origin

Written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund dates it to c. 1400 (KKKat), whereas Stefán Karlsson dates it to c. 1370 (Stefán Karlsson 1967, p. 28).

Provenance

On fols 2r and 4r a seventeenth century hand has written: “Snæbjörn Steffánsson”, and on f. 11r the name “snore asgeirsson” appears.

Acquisition

Árni Magnússon got the fragments from several places.

  • An AM slip written for Árni Magnússon tells of f. 4: “Þetta Sverris sogu blad feck eg 1706 af Arna Hannessyne, og hafde hann þad fundid j rusle ä ytra Hölme, og var þar eckert meira þess slags. Þad er manifestè ur sama volumine sem þad eina blad ur Magnuss sogu lagabætis er eg fenged hefe utan af Kvere Hannesar Þorleifssonar”.
  • A note in Árni Magnússon's hand on f. 9r reads: “i Reyk hollt 1707”.
  • Another note in the bottom margin of f. 10r says: “Ur Aust fiordum 1711”.
  • On an AM slip concerning f. 13 Árni Magnússon has written: “Þetta blad var utanum qver, er att hafdi Hannes Þorleifsson”.
  • According to Fornmanna sögur IX a leaf of paper in Árni Magnússon's hand belongs to f. 7. Here Árni explains that he has bought a book bound with this leaf at an auction in Copenhagen.
