Condition

There are several defects and Árni Magnússon has marked some of them on the lower margin of the previous page. The folios 19, 23, 28, 29 have been damaged due to trimming of the outer margin and 78, 84 have been trimmed in the lower margin. 1r is blank.

Layout

The manuscript is written in 2 columns with the exception of the first 2 and last 5 leaves, which are written in 1 column.

Script

Hand 1 occurs on 2r-v and is from the second half of the sixteenth century written in gothic cursive.

Hand 2 is from the middle of the fourteenth century and occurs on 1r-v. It is written in a gothic bookhand.

Hand 3 is also a gothic bookhand from the middle of the fourteenth century, but is slightly more blurred than hand 2.

Hand 4 is found on 82r-v and is a gothic bookhand from the middle of the fourteenth century.

Decoration

The initials have various colours and there are rubrics in red.

Binding

Earlier the manuscript was bound in a grey cardboard binding but is now after restoration bound in a modern standard half binding.

History

Origin

Kristian Kålund has dated the manuscript to the fourteenth century, but even more precise dates have been given. In 1885 Gustav Storm dated 1r-83v to c. 1350, a date, which has also been given by John Landrö in 1969 John Landrö 1969, p. 21, p. 67 and Åse Sletten Robertsen in 1979 Åse Sletten Robertsen 1979, p.138. 84r-85v has been dated to c. 1330 also by Gustav Storm and later by Didrik Seip in 1955.Didrik Arup Seip 1955, p.332 Storm, 1885, p. 539.

Provenance

The owners are mentioned on 85v :“asmunder …sigurderson”. Another owner “Jacop lauriszon” who owned the manuscript in 1576 is mentioned on 1v, and according to the first AM-slip the name and date “Carl Andersen anno 1575” was written on the old binding, when Árni Magnússon acquired the manuscript.

Acquisition

According to the same AM-slip the manuscript finally came into the possession of gehejmeråd Matthias Moth who acquired it from Norway, and he gave it to Árni Magnússon.

Custodial History

The manuscript was restored from 1981.04.22 to 1982.03.30. The former grey cardboard binding has been replaced and manuscript was set on meeting guards and bound in a modern standard half binding.

The manuscript was photographed in 1981.

The manuscript was lent to the The University Library of Oslo for the use of Tryggve Knudsen from 1977.06.15 to 1978.06.10.
