No. of leaves
8 leaves. 200-204 mm x 157-159 mm The final leaf has been trimmed slightly more than the others (width 154 mm).

  • I: fols. 1-8 (1+8, 2+7, 3+6, 4+5)

There are no catchwords.
Condition

The paper is rather light with slight discoloration around the edges and on fol. 8v.

There is slight moisture damage on the edges of the leaves, mostly in the lower outer corner.

A small tear in the outer margin of fol. 1 has been repaired by means of Japanese paper.

A small piece is torn from the lower margin of fol. 4, which does not affect the text.

Generally in good condition.

Layout

The manuscript is written in one column with 18 to 23 lines per page and ca. 9 words per line.

The dimensions of the written area are on average 158 mm (height), 118 mm (width). 148-171 mm x 110-123 mm

The wider margin is always on the left side of the written area, also on recto-pages.

Decoration

There are penwork initials up to two lines in height for the chapter headings and the rubric. Black is the only ink used.

Additions

On the front pastedown, the shelfmark and other catalogue related marks are added.

On fol. 1r, “N 38” was added in large script above the title of the text. At first, this shelfmark number was written in reddish-brown crayon, but later it was redrawn in black ink.

Binding

Grey cardboard binding from ca. 1771-1780 with pastedowns from printed material.

Two of Kålund's labels on the spine: the upper one for the shelfmark is square and turquoise (580 mm in height), the lower one for the running number is circular and white.

On the front board, “No 38. A Skaanske Kircke Loug.” is written in black ink. Orignally, the letter of the shelfmark was “B”, but was later crossed out at substituted with a superscript “A” in lighter brown ink.

This manuscript is stored in one box together with AM 38 b 4to.

History

Origin

The manuscript was written in Denmark. Kålund: Katalog vol. I p. 365 dates it to the 17th century.

Narrower dating information is provided by Schlyter: Corpus juris Sveo-Gotorum antiqui: Codex juris Scanici vol. IX p. xcix, who dates it to the later half of the 17th century.

Provenance

At some point part of a larger manuscript, later divided into two units: AM 38 a 4to and AM 38 b 4to.

Number “38 in 4to” was recorded in Jón Ólafsson's catalogue (1730) as one manusript, but there is no indication of two copies.
