Physical Description

Support

Parchment.

No. of leaves
121. 316 mm x 230 mm
Condition

The first thirteen leaves are missing and there are a few lacunae: between fols 3 and 4 two leaves are missing and another leaf is missing between fols 42 and 43. These lacunae are indicated by Árni Magnússon on two slips and in the margins.

Layout

Written in two columns. Majuscules occur in varying colours with the exception of the text of Vitæ patrum where the blank spaces have not been filled in.

Script

Written by several hands. Unger ( p. xxviii-xxix) suggested that the manuscript could be a composite of different manuscripts.

Additions

The originally blank fol. 83v and 85v have pen trials and the like. In the margin of f. 83v it says: “snore ionson a míck”. The lacunae between ff. 3 and 4 and 42 and 43, respectively, are indicated in the margins by Árni Magnússon.

Accompanying Material

There are four AM-slips written by Árni Magnússon.

  • The first slip was originally pasted to the first flyelaf and reads: “Baarlams Saga, vantar mikid | framanvid. fol. 1-54. | Mariu saga. fol. 55- + | Jons saga baptista. | Hieronymi vitas patrum | vantar mikid aptanvid.”
  • Two slips, originally inserted between the lacunae, read: “Her vantar tvo blod | sem verda fẏlld ur ex| emplarium i 4to (No. 230.)” (between ff. 3 and 4);
  • and: “Her vantar 1 blad, sem | fẏllt verdur ur exemplarium i | 4to (6)” (between ff. 42 and 43).
  • The fourth leaf was pasted to the beginning of Jóns saga baptista: “Her vantar framanvid | formala Grims prestz.”.

History

Origin

Skrevet i Munkaþverá, Island. Barlaams saga ok Jósafats is written ca. 1300; Jón Ketilsson's debt on fol. 54v is written ca. 1440, — Maríu saga, — Jóns saga baptista and — Vitæ patrum are all written c. 1350, but — Framfǫr Maríu is written in the fifteenth century.

Provenance

The marginal note on fol. 83v indicates that Snorri Jónsson once owned this codex “snore ionson a míck”. According to Árni Magnússon’s account on ff. 9v-10r in AM 435 a 4to the manuscript belonged to Björn Magnússon of Múnkaþverá and that Guðbrandur Björnsson claimed that the manuscript belonged to his ancestors of Munkaþverá. The manuscript was subsequently was abandoned and left in one of the monastic houses of Munkaþverá.

The next owner Sveinn Torfason must have found it at Munkaþverá and kept it. He gave it to Magnús Jónsson of Leirá who in his turn gave it to Árni Magnússon: “Bokin er in folio, komin til min 1698. fra Magnuſe Jonsſyne fra Leyrä. enn til hans fra Sveine Torfaſyne. hefr til forna vered i eigu Biorns Magnusſonar ä Munkaþverä. id certum est, og lærde þä Gudbrandur Biornsson ä henne ad lesa. Baarlams Sogu etc. folio feck eg af Magnuse Jonssyne. þä hann var Studiosus i Kaupenhafn. Magnus hafdi feinged hana af Sveine Torfasyne. Sveinn sagde mier sidan, ad hun hefdi fundist burt kostud i Klaustur husunum ä Munkaþverä. Eg spurdi Gudbrand Biorns son um þessa Barlaams Sogu. Sagde hann, ad nefnd Saga in folio hefdi fyrrum vered ä Munka þverä i eigu fedr sins, og gat til, ad Sveinn Torfason mundi bokina funded hafa þar i hirdslum einhverium. Ber þessu so ollu saman.”.

Acquisition

Árni Magnússon acquired the manuscript of Magnús Jónsson of Leirá i 1698. See AM 435 a 4to: “Bokin er in folio, komin til min 1698. fra Magnuse Jonssyne fra Leyrä” og “Baarlams Sogu etc. folio feck eg af Magnuse Jonssyne. þä hann var Studiosus i Kaupenhafn”.
