Physical Description

Support

Paper. There are five different watermarks, all of them are found in Piemont (Northern Italy), Savoy and Switzerland, and dated between 1438 and 1485.

No. of leaves
80. 295 mm x 218 mm.
Foliation

Foliated in red ink in the upper corner of the recto pages, probably by Kristian Kålund. Fol. 33a was by an oversight not foliated. On fols 46-49 an old foliation, starting with 1, can be found. This might be another indicator, that the part with illustrations was originally intended as an individual book.

Collation

There are seven quires, but due to the tight binding and added leaves the original collation cannot be identified with certainty.

  • I: originally a septernio: fols 1-14 (1, 2, 3+12, 4+11, 5+10, 6+9, 7+8, 13, 14)
  • II: a sexternio: fols 15-26 (15+26, 16+25, 17+24, 18+23, 19+22, 20+21)
  • III: a quinternio: fols 27-35 (27+35, 28+34, 29+33a, 30+33, 31+32)
  • IV: a quinternio: fols 36-45 (36+45, 37+44, 38+43, 39+42, 40+41)
  • V: originally a sexternio: fols 46-57 (46, 47+56, 48+55, 49+54, 50+53, 51+52, 57)
  • VI: a sexternio: fols 58-69 (58+69, 59+68, 60+67, 61+66, 62+65, 63+64)
  • VII: a quinternio: fols 70-79 (70+79, 71+78, 72+77, 73+76, 74+75)

Condition

Because of water damage on the upper part of the book block, the text there is difficult to read or even illegible, especially close to the spine and in the part with the illustrations. As this damage is only on the book block but not on the binding, it must have happened before the book was bound. On some leaves the edges have been excised.

Layout

The text is written in long lines throughout with 27 to 33 lines per page. Rubrics and initials are red, and the first letter of each line are decorated with a simple red stroke. Only the initial on fol. 1v is red and blue with leaf-ornamentation and extends to the top margin and along the text part of the page. Most of the times, the chapter counting is found in the outer margins next to the first lines of the chapter.

Script

The scribe Johannes Bengedans of Grebenstein, Hessen, names himself on the first page of the manuscript (1r): “Johannes bengedans van greuensten | in hessen lant / Der hot diß buch ghescriben | mit syner hant ?”. The script of the book, including rubrics, chapter headings and descriptions of the illustrations, is the same as the one of three letters, signed with the same name. He is also mentioned as a participant in the negotiations in 1447/48 about the purchase of Gotland for the Deutscher Orden, being a member of the Orden. He has also illustrated the book.

Marignalia on fols 3v-4v, 18r-v, 24v and 44v and possibly the rubric on fol. 33a were writen by a second, not much younger hand.

Decoration

The illustrations can be roughly divided into two categories: weapons or tools, and "actions" in a broad sense (e.g. fol. 77r how to walk underwater). The text part of the book has only occationally drawings in the margins or at the end of a chapter, they are usually in red, orange and/or brown. Often the illustrations have short descriptions or explanations written in red ink. Only on fol. 24r a drawing covers the whole page. The illustration part of the book, however, has large colourful drawings that ususally cover the whole page and only have rather short descriptions in normal ink.
