Physical Description

Support

Parchment.

No. of leaves
6
Condition

The leaves are considerably blackened and worn; there are some parts of the manuscript where the parchment has become so dark and the writing so indistinct that reading is made difficult or impossible. The last 2-3 lines of f. 3, except from a small part close to the inner margin, are cut out.

Layout

The fragment is written in long lines with 32-39 to the page.

Additions

The top and bottom margin of f. 1r contain a seventeenth century authorization for “Häldan B S” to receive his inheritance from the brother of the issuer “S O S”.

Binding

The fragment is bound in a grey cardboard cover.

History

Origin

The manuscript is written in Iceland. Kristian Kålund has dated the manuscript to the fourteenth century (Katalog over Den Arnamagnæanske Håndskriftsamling), whereas Gustav Morgenstern (Morgenstern 1893, p. 52) and Ian J. Kirby (Biblical Quotation , p. 94, 20 n. 9) have dated it more precisely to the first half of the fourteenth century.

Provenance

  • ff. 1 and 2 has belonged to the lawman Páll Jónsson Vídialín.
  • f. 4 has belonged to a Guðmundur Björnsson of Djúpidalur when serving as binding for a book of his. He lent the book to a friend, Gísli Guðmundsson of Úlfstaðir. Gísli wrote this note in the upper margin of f. 4v: “Eg þacka mijnum virta vin Mons Gudmunde Biornssyne ä Diupadal firer bokarlaned og vil hon·m asstur þeina J vidlijka Efne. Vlfstodum d. 2. Decembris Anno 1708 Gisle Gudmundsson m e h.”

Acquisition

According to a note on f. 1v in Árni Magnússon's hand, he got ff. 1-2 from the lawman Páll Jónsson Vídalín in 1712, ff. 3-4 were once found in Addit. 43 fol.
