AM 325 II 4to

Ágrip af Noregskonunga sǫgum ; Iceland, 1200-1250

Athugasemd
AM 325 II 4to is the only extant manuscript of the work known as Ágrip af Noregskonunga sǫgum, a synoptic history of the kings of Norway. Although the work is thought to have been written in Norway, probably in the last decade of the twelfth century, the manuscript itself is Icelandic and dates from the first half of the thirteenth century. The manuscript is unfortunately defective, lacking both the beginning and the end, and with two significant lacunae in the second half. In its present state Ágrip covers Norway's history from the death of Hálfdan the Black in about 880 to the accession of Ingi the Hunchback in 1136. In its orginal form, however, the work is thought to have begun with Hálfdan's reign and continued, like the more exsive and better-known series of kings' sagas Heimskringla and Fagrskinna, down to the accession of Sverrir Sigurðarson in 1177.

Blaðefni

Parchment.

Blaðfjöldi
25 (1a+ 24). Fols 1-7: 145 mm x 120 mm. Fols 8-24: 150 mm x 130 mm.
Tölusetning blaða

The manuscript has been foliated 1-24 in red ink, probably by Guðbrandur Vigfússon, and also columnated 1-96, in all likelihood by Verner Dahlerup.

Kveraskipan

There are now four gatherings, the first, second and fourth originally consisting of eight leaves, the third of seven. A fifth gathering thought to have followed has left no trace.

  • I: 7 leaves, fols 1-7; a first leaf, originally conjoint with fol. 7, having been cut away leaving only a narrow strip along the gutter; the others, fols 1 + 6, 2 + 5, and 3 + 4, are bifolia.
  • II: 8 leaves, fols 8-15, 4 bifolia.
  • III: 7 leaves, fols 16-22. Fols 16 and 22 are conjoint, the others singletons.
  • IV: 2 leaves, fols 23-24, a bifolium.

Umbrot

The manuscript is written in two columns throughout. Most columns contain 25 lines; the exceptions are cols 18 (fol. 5rb) and 22 (fol. 6rb) with 24 lines (owing to spaces left between chapters), cols 89-90 (fol. 23r) with 23 lines and cols 91-96 (fols 23v-24v) with 22 lines. The pricking is visible on all leaves.

Ástand

The text begins and ends defectively, and there are two lacunae towards the end. What was originally the first leaf of the first quire, numbered 1a, has been cut away, leaving a strip approximately 15 mm wide; one to two letters, in some places on the verso up to four, remain of each line.

The manuscript contains a large number of erasures, possibly by the scribe, possibly by a later hand, but in any case for the most part not filled in; for example on fol. 3ra, lines 15-16 there are two erasures, the first of perhaps 16, the second of six characters, and four lines of text have been erased on fol. 5vb following line 21.

Skrifarar og skrift

The manuscript is written in two contemporary hands, otherwise unknown, but clearly those of practised scribes. Hand I writes fols 1r to 22v and hand II fols 23 to 24. Some scholars, notably Verner Dahlerup ( 1880 s. IV ) and Hreinn Benediktsson ( 1965 s. xxi ), have argued for a third hand on fol. 24, but the evidence for this is insubstantial.

Spássíugreinar og aðrar viðbætur

Spaces for initials and chapter headings were left by the scribe, but not filled in. A later, probably fifteenth-century, hand has added initials and chapter headings in greenish-coloured ink on fols 8r-9r, 10r and 11r. Although a few of these chapter headings are now rather difficult to read, most can be made out, e.g. fol. 8rb floti astridar , fol. 9rb vm olaf konung and fol. 10ra Gipting olafs konungs.

The manuscript contains the following marginalia:

  • Fol. 4v, left margin: hialmadr og | brynjadr, in a fifteenth-cenury hand, imitating an addition made to the text by the scribe at this point.
  • Fol. 5r, bottom margin: þetta þiki mer vera gott blek ennda kann ek icki betr sia, in a fifteenth-century hand, probably the same as that on the previous page.
  • Fol. 9v, bottom margin: þessa bok uilda eg gæt lært med | an Gud gefe myer Gott ad | læra; seventeenth-century hand.

There are in addition a number of illegible scribbles in a later hand (or hands) on fols 2r, 3r, 5v and 19r; what appears to be the name Þórgeir Jónsson is written in a similar hand on fols 6r and 16r.

Band

Formerly unbound (cf. Verner Dahlerup, Verner Dahlerup 1880 s. iii ), the manuscript was bound during restoration between September 1969 and January 1970.

Fylgigögn

There are six slips (a-f) written in Árni Magnússon's hand bound into the manuscript:

  • The first, a, is from Árni's original paper cover to the manuscript. It reads: 325 (2) Vetustum | Historia Norvegicæ Com-|pendium. | mutilum est.
  • The second, b, reads: Eignarmenn þessa fragments | hafa nylegast vered | Þorgeir Jonsson. | Jon Hakonarson. | Þordr Jonsson | Eg. Following this another hand has written in pencil: Höndin án efa íslenzk.
  • The third, c, originally between fols 16 and 17, reads: Her er einn aukamide, | er eins lä, ädur enn eg | arked samanfeste. At the bottom Verner Dahlerup has added: Mellem sp. 64 og 65. | V.D.
  • The fourth, d, originally between fols 22 and 23, reads: Hier ætla eg vanta | 1. blad utanum þesse | 2. blǫd, hvar vid ann -|ad hafi samfast vered | sem vante aptan vid | þesse .2. blǫd, sem hier | liggia innani. Verner Dahlerup has added at the bottom: Foran sp. 89. | V.D.
  • The fifth, e, originally between fols 23 and 24, reads: Hier innani mun vanta | 4. blǫd, sem tynd | sieu. Verner Dahlerup adds: Mellem spalte 92 og 93. | V.D.
  • The sixth, f, originally following fol. 24, reads: Hier aptanvid vantar | ad vïsu 1. blad, sem | ädur er sagt. likast | hier vante og eitt | ark, enn þä aptanvid | eda nockur blǫd, sem | vered hafi i arke | fyrer sig sialf. Verner Dahlerup adds: Efter spalte 96. | V.D.

Uppruni og ferill

Uppruni

Written in Iceland in the first half of the thirteenth century.

Ferill

According to Árni Magnússon's account in his catalogue of Icelandic parchment manuscripts, AM 435 a 4to, fols 54v-56v, the manuscript was owned by Sr. Þórður Jónsson of Staðastaður , who had acquired it from Jón Hákonarson að Vatnshorni, who had in turn got it from Þorgeir Jónsson , ráðsmaður at Hólar and brother of Bishop Steinn Jónsson. Presumably, this man also wrote his name on fols 6r and 16r.

Þorgeir got the manuscript probably in 1696 or 1697 at Kalastaðir, Hvalfjarðarströnd, from Þórður Illugason, son of Illugi Vigfússon, son of Vigfús Jónsson, sýslumaður. Þorgeir's wife, Margrét Guðmundsdóttir, and Þórður Illugason, who had no children of his own, were related (þrímenningar).

The full text of Árni Magnússon's comments reads:Compendium Historiæ Norvegicæ, | undiqve mutilum, alias frag-|mentum rarissimum. 4to mi-|nori.
