Fysisk Beskrivelse / Kodikologi

Materiale

Parchment.

Antal blade
45. 226-227 mm x 138-140 mm
Foliering

The manuscript is paginated by Árni Magnússon. He has inserted 3 blank paperleaves in the first gathering, corresponding to the 3 fragment-leaves, and has paginated them 0 to 5, assuming that f. 1r originally was blank. The first entire extant page is then p. 6.

Lægfordeling

The MS consists of 7 gatherings:

  • I. this gathering, once consisting of 8 leaves has 3 fragment-leaves + 5 leaves
  • II. has 11 leaves, with 5 conjoint leaves; the 9th leaf in the gathering is a singleton.
  • III. has lost its innermost bifolia, and now consists of 6 leaves
  • IV. has 8 leaves
  • V. has 8 leaves
  • VI. has 8 leaves
  • VII. has 7 leaves because the 8th has been torn out

Tilstand

The first three leaves have been torn out, leaving small fragments on some of which odd letters are preserved. There is a lacuna of two conjoint leaves between ff. 19 and 20, and the last leaves of the MS has been lost. What is left is in good condition: the writing is clear and easily readable, the vellum unstained.

Layout

Written in long lines with 26 lines to the page, except from p. 99 that has 26 lines to the page. The written areas have 195-198 mm x 115 mm. Majuscules and rubrics in red ink.

Skrift

pp. 1-98, Ólafs saga Tryggvasonar, is written in one hand. It is an Icelandic Gothic bookhand, obviously that of a professional scribe.

p. 99, Tíu laga-orð Guðs and — Tíu undr Egiptalands, is written by a later hand. It is an Icelandic Gothic bookhand with very few abbreviations.

Tilføjet materiale

There are marginal notes in a hand that has been identified as that of Jón Símonsson (1512-1575), now the most of them are almost cut away. These notes comment on the content of the saga.

Vedlagt materiale

There are 4 AM slips: a-d.

  • The a and b-slips are conjoint. Here Árni Magnússon comments on the defects of the manuscript
  • The c and d-slip are copies of the Ten Commandments etc. written for Árni Magnússon. Yet the first 6-7 lines on the recto of the c-slip is in Árni's hand: „Ex codice membraneo in 4to in bibliotheca Wilh. Wormii, ad calcem historiae Olai Tryggvonii quam una cum S. Olai historia continent (codicem illum nunc possidet A. Magnæus“. A copy of the odd text on the small fragments is also made

Historie og herkomst

Proveniens

The MS is written in Iceland. It was by most scholars supposed written in Norway until 1978. Stefán Karlsson then wrote the article Om norvagismer i islandske håndskrifter where he identified the MS as belonging to a group of manuscripts written in the monastery of Þingeyrar (Stefán Karlsson 1978, pp. 87-95). In this article he also dates the manuscript to the second half of the thirteenth century.

Herkomst

Nothing is known of the history of the codex until the sixteenth century when notes in Latin and Norwegian were written in the margins of some of the pages. Notes of the same type and in the same hand are also found in AM 68 fol., and the hand has been identified as that of Jón Simonsen, Lawman of Adger in Southern Norway (1512-1575). The bound volume was in the possession of the Danish scholar Ole Worm in 1633-34, and was inherited by his son, Villum Worm, and grandson, The Bishop Christian Worm, who finally gave it to Árni Magnússon.

Erhvervelse

Árni Magnússon got the manuscript from Christian Worm in 1706. At that time it was bound together with AM 68 fol. Árni separated the two manuscripts and had AM 310 4to rebound. f. 40v in AM 435 a 4to says: „Olafs Saga Tryggvasonar auctore Oddo monacho. Olafs saga Helga. 4to.
