Physical Description

Support

Paper.

No. of leaves
i + 349 + ii. Fol. 8v is blank except for three lines. 200 mm x 152 mm.
Foliation

Foliated irregularly with pencil in the outer bottom corners, beginning with the front fly-leaf. On fols 100, 180, 200, 220, 240, 260, 280, 300, 320 and 340 an older foliation with dark ink in the top outer corners can be seen.

Collation

There are catchwords on most pages between fols 2r and 165r.

Condition

The top margins of fols 2 to 10 have been cut with some minor loss of text.

Layout

Written in one column with 26 to 33 lines per page.

Script

Written in one hand throughout. The hand is the same hand as in Rask 32, attributed by Rasmus Rask to Ólafur Gíslason.

Additions

On the verso-side of the fly-leaf a table of contents has been added.

History

Origin

Written in Iceland in the eighteenth century.

Provenance

On the recto fly-leaf the name “B Bogason” is found; this man is most probably Benedikt Bogason. Also on the fly-leaf, the entry “Þessa bők hef ek uppbunded ad niju | Jon Jons Son. Asgarde.” (Jón Jónson from Ásgarður) is found. At the bottom of fol. 2r a: “Jóhann Olafsson” has written his name. The scribe, Ólafur Gíslason, had a son called Jóhann, and it was most likely he who has written his name.

Acquisition

According to Chris Sanders's conjecture (Sanders 2001 p. cxxii), Rasmus Rask acquired the manuscript in 1815.
